Family Movie Review: Walking with Dinosaurs (PG)

WalkingwithDinosaurs ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG         Length: 87 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 4+. CGI dinosaurs fight each other, a parent dinosaur dies, two young dinosaurs fall in love but the female has no problem partnering off with the male’s older brother, the leader of the herd, because those are “the rules,” and lots of bathroom humor. The obvious nature of the story and lack of real laughs will make this not-so-fun for children older than 9 or 10, and certainly insufferable for parents.

‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ is one of the worst family-friendly movies of the year, impressively not only making some of history’s most interesting creatures insufferable and annoying, but also teaching children about stereotypical gender roles and making its female character useless. Yay! Don’t see it.

If you have watched the BBC series “Walking with Dinosaurs” or seen the touring show with huge, life-size puppets, do not see the movie “Walking with Dinosaurs.” It will ruin all the joy and affection you might have for those other same-named things. And it might also ruin your Christmas and New Year’s. This kind of awful doesn’t abide by boundaries of time and space.
