All armed to battle the flu this year — FranklyStein

I am anal when it comes to the flu vaccine. I can't imagine letting my family go without it.

There were too many years when the kids were little that we were housebound for weeks during the winter as one bug after another made the rounds. When your have six people in a family, a weeklong flu illness could potentially paralyze your household for a month or more. And that's just the inconvenience factor. There is also the chance that the flu can actually be deadly even for healthy kids. I know of a little girl who died from the flu when she was about 6 or 7. It was a horribly sad story.

So if there is something I can do to lower the chances of at least one illness each winter, I'm all for it.

This year the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that families get the flu shot as soon as possible. When I was posting this on our website last Friday, I realized I hadn't checked in with our pediatrician yet about scheduling the vaccination so I gave them a quick call. It just so happens they were having their first FluMist clinic on Saturday, so I signed us up. I love the fact that they have the mist now. Even though my kids are older, there would still be a huge amount of arguing if I had to drag them to get a shot every year. As it was, there was only a little grumbling and the whole thing took less than 10 minutes. And now we are good to go.

I have friends who forget to get the vaccine or don't think it's necessary, and every winter when families start dropping like flies — I'm glad I'm a little anal. Sure we will still have viruses come through the family, but having had the vaccination takes a little bit of the stress off. Cause I hate it when my kids get sick. My heart still skips a beat when one of them tells me they aren't feeling well. It probably always will.
