White House Executive Pastry Chef shares stories at Sotterley Plantation

Chef Roland MesnierPastry Chef Roland MesnierEnjoy stories and tidbits about what happens behind the White House doors, especially in the kitchen, from former White House Executive Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier. Mesnier's presentation, "Lifetime White House Pastry Chef and Beyond," kicks off the 2015 Speaker Series at the Sotterley Plantation Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at 7 p.m.

As the White House executive pastry chef for 25 years, Mesnier created and served special confections to five presidents, their families and international dignitaries. He was the first non-American to serve in the White House and became the longest tenured chef in its history. During his appearance, Mesnier will talk about his experiences at the White House and his career after.

Mesnier's career grew from humble beginnings as a young baker's apprentice in France, where he discovered his trade. From working as the sous pastry chef at the iconic Savoy Hotel in London to executive pastry chef at what is now Paris Four Seasons Hotel George V and at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va., Mesnier eventually reached the Executive Mansion.

During his career, Mesnier earned several awards and prestigious distinctions, including 18 gold medals in worldwide competitions and induction into the Chocolate Hall of Fame in New York. He was voted by his peers as Pastry Chef of the Year in Paris in 1987 and received the Legion of Honor in 2005 from President Jacques Chirac.

A Sweet World of White House DessertsMesnier has written several books, including "All the Presidents' Pastries," "Dessert University" and "A Sweet World of White House Desserts."
