Easy Family Recipes: Pizza Burgers

Pizza BurgersGrowing up, pizza burgers were one of my very favorite dinners. Whenever my mom and grandma would whip up a batch, my brothers and I knew we were in for a treat. Pizza burgers aren't what you think: a burger with some pizza sauce on top. Instead, they're more akin to sloppy Joes made with pizza sauce. They're easy to prepare and are completely delicious! After reminiscing about them last week, two of my co-workers ran home and made them for dinner, to rave reviews from their families. The biggest bonus? You can easily double or triple the beef mixture and pop it into the freezer for a future dinner or two. If you have a homemade pizza sauce recipe that you love, definitely use that. Crunched for time? Jarred or canned sauce will do you just fine. Either way, your family will love them!

Pizza Burgers

Serves 4

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, cut into small dice
  • 1 15 ounce jar pizza sauce
  • 4 English muffins, each split into two halves
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Turn your oven to broil and place an oven rack 6" below the heating element.

Brown ground beef and onion together in a large saute pan over medium high heat on the stove. Drain fat and discard. Add pizza sauce to the beef and onion mixture, and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes. While the beef mixture is cooking, toast the English muffins.

Divide beef mixture evenly among the toasted English muffins. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese. Place under the broiler for 2 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve immediately.
