Navigating the college search is no simple task — FranklyStein

Sibs York WAs I'm sending my oldest off to college next week, I'm also scrambling to find schools to take my twins to visit.

I don't have five seconds to pat myself on the back for successfully getting one child into college because I'm already behind the eight ball with the next two — who are now seniors in high school.

Boys and girls and homework — FranklyStein

Adam1What is it about boys and schoolwork?

Lately, I feel like I have to do some serious stealth work to find out if A. my boys have homework and B. they are doing it.

Here's a conversation I've had in my house several times recently.

"Hey Adam, do you have much homework tonight?"

"No, not too much."

"Any tests?"

"Um. A quiz in bio."

"Anything else."

"Maybe a test in health."

"Anything else?"

"No. I don't think so."

A word of advice to teenage boys asked to homecoming — FranklyStein

Hey, all you young teenage boys out there. Let me give you a hint. If a girl asks you to a homecoming dance, give her an answer.

Don't say, "Uh. Let me think about it" or "I'm not sure" or "Let me contemplate that." Just say yes or no. And unless you have something pressing that night or are allergic to girls, why not just say yes? It's not like she's asking to marry you.

My daughter asked a friend from middle school to the homecoming dance at her all-girls school a few weeks ago. She thought he would be a fun date, that it wouldn't be awkward, and that they could just go as friends. But by his reaction, you'd think she had cooties. He said he needed to "contemplate it." He told her he would let her know in a few days. After thinking about it, she decided to put him out of his misery and save her self-respect. She told him not to worry about it. His response? "Cool."

The last chapter of my parenting blog — FranklyStein

Me at deskThis is the last installment of FranklyStein, and my last week as editor of Chesapeake Family Life magazine.

It seems a little ironic that the same week my oldest is going off to college, I'm graduating from the parenting media industry and heading off to college too. I'll be working full time as a communications specialist at University of Maryland Baltimore.

Taking a European family vacation — FranklyStein Guest Blogger

Katie Europe Fam WThis week's FranklyStein is brought to you by Chesapeake Family Life freelance writer Katie Riley, who is guest blogging while I am on vacation.

This summer my family spent two weeks in Europe visiting Paris and London. Our family of five has traveled frequently in the U.S., but the idea of taking a 13-, 10-, and 7-year-old abroad was daunting.
