Enjoy spring decorations during Annapolis May Day basket competition

Annapolis May basket Stroll through historic Annapolis on May 1 and enjoy spring flowers during the annual May Day basket competition, when residents and businesses in the historic district and parts of Murray Hill make and display May baskets.

Kids can also make May baskets for the competition. and these are judged in their own category. Children who enter receive ribbons and a lollipop. Multiple winners are invited to the May Day Tea held May 5, 2015.

Only fresh-cut flowers are allowed in the baskets or basket-like containers, and all entries include a card indicating the entrant's name.

Displays will be out by 10 a.m. for judging by Garden Club of Old Annapolis-Towne members and viewing by visitors to historic Annapolis.

The May Day basket tradition in Annapolis dates back to 1956 when the club asked the residents of downtown Annapolis to decorate their front doors with flower arrangements and judges awarded prizes for the best displays. A category for businesses was added the next year.

The children's division was started in 1964.
