Master Gardeners Calvert Library webPlants may be a bit confused by this year's wacky winter weather but that doesn't mean you need to be unsure about your garden planning.

Take advantage of expert advice from Calvert County Master Gardeners during the Garden Smarter series hosted at the Calvert Library. Each Garden Smarter workshop is free to the public, and there are often giveaways. Gardeners can also swap seeds at upcoming events at Calvert and Anne Arundel libraries.

The first Garden Smarter session is Saturday, Jan. 9, at 10 a.m. at Calvert Library Prince Frederick when Lucy Muehleisen teaches “Companion Planting.” Learn about positive symbiotic crop relationships, how to keep insect pests away while attracting beneficial insects, how to enhance the health of garden soil and, generally, how to grow great-tasting vegetables.

Back by popular demand, Bill Santiff will host a workshop on Jan. 30 about how to build an herb spiral.

Additional Garden Smarter workshops will be held throughout Calvert County during the year. Check the library's website for the complete Garden Smarter schedule.

Also find out about Calvert Eats Local, which is free to join by contacting Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, 410-535-0291. The winter potluck is Monday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Bring your own plate, utensils, cup and napkin for a truly “green” experience.

For details, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Library Seed Swaps

Calvert County is again planning a seed swap for Saturday, Jan. 23, at Calvert Library Prince Frederick from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Whether you saved seeds from your garden, have leftovers from seed packets or are looking for seeds, all are welcome to the second annual Calvert Seed Swap, which is part of the Garden Smarter series. Heirloom seeds especially welcome, but do not bring PVP seeds or seeds that are chemically treated. All seeds need to be divided and labeled with as much detail as you can.

Anne Arundel County Libraries also help patrons exchange seeds in January at the following events:

  • SoCoGrowSeed Swap Party, Jan. 13, 7-8:30 p.m. at Deale library. Bring clearly labeled seeds from 2013 or newer and also get seed-planting tips.
  • Seed Swap Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. at Crofton library. Bring seeds or come empty handed. Master Gardeners will be on hand to help with the swap.
