February is the Month for Vision and Hearing Screening in AA County Schools

Mark your calendars! It’s time for the Anne Arundel County Department of Health to conduct mandatory vision and hearing screening in county schools.

The screenings are required for students in preschool, kindergarten, first and eighth grade, and for those who are newly enrolled in Anne Arundel County schools. In addition, some special education students may be recommended for screening. Anne Arundel County Department of Health vision and hearing technicians also visit many private schools, nurseries and day care programs to provide screening services. Students who wear glasses should bring them to school on the day of the screening.

The screenings can indicate the presence of a potential vision or hearing problem that may impair a child’s ability to perform successfully in school. In the event a screening indicates a problem, the technicians cannot diagnose exactly what is wrong with a child’s eyes or hearing. A letter is sent to the parents informing them of the results and indicating the child is referred for a comprehensive eye exam. The parents are advised to contact the child’s doctor for further testing and advice. Those who pass may also be referred for a comprehensive eye exam if they are at a high risk of having a vision disorder because of a medical or developmental reason.

If you find your family searching for a healthcare provider following the screening, be sure to check out the Chesapeake Family LIFE’s Favorite Docs. These providers come highly recommended by our readers and the list includes optometrists, ophthalmologists, ENTs and others.
