How to identify early signs of learning differences

preschoolAB WUpdate: Oct. 26, 2016

Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy, executive director of The Summit School, provided an informative session on Identifying Signs of Learning Differences at Chesapeake Family offices Oct. 25, 2016. From behaviorial issues to working with your child’s pediatrician and teacher, Mele-McCarthy provided information that all parents of young children should know.

For example, she talked about developmental milestones and expectations for children as young as a few months up through elementary school and suggested tasks parents can do with their children to help develop language skills.

Watch the video from the session, embedded farther down. The first few minutes are spent introducing audience members and waiting for Facebook Live to pick up the feed but what follows is an hour of very important information about developing reading and language skills in young children.

Signs of learning or developmental problems can surface at a young age. Early recognition and access to timely, evidence-based programs and services are critical to future learning success.

The Summit School in Edgewater, Maryland, provides education for students with dyslexia and other learning differences from age 6 to eighth grade.
