Summer Fun—Day 1: Commemorate Memorial Day with the kids

Memorial Day is much more than a three day weekend to kick off summer. It's the day we remember those who have died while serving our country.

If you want to celebrate beyond the picnics, pool openings and parties, there are several ceremonies and parades taking place today that would be great for your kids. Check out our roundup of Memorial Day activities.

Flag kidsA commemoration is being held at Fort McHenry in Baltimore to remember the Civil War Origins of Memorial Day all weekend. The kids can also check out the star fort and run around on the vast grounds—an awesome place for a picnic. Parades are also planned in Annapolis, Bowie and Washington, D.C. See the roundup for details.

For other ideas to teach kids about this special day, check out Military.com's post on Commemorating Memorial Day with Kids. It gives great suggestions, including taking cookies to a nearby veteran's hospital, making cards for soldiers overseas and going on an online scavenger hunt that helps kids learn about Memorial Day.
