Summer Fun—Day 20: Take a sky-high adventure

Take your kids on an adventure where they can explore the canpoy of the trees and fly through the air on a giant swing.

Rope CourseExploring a ropes course is a great way to get in some physical activity while boosting confidence and creating family unity. There are several ropes courses in the area to visit. With activities such as rope courses throughout the trees, zip-lining, bridge walking high above the ground, and other unique challenges; people will experience skills of perseverance and confidence. 

Terrapin Adventures in Savage has a swing and zip line on its ropes course, which has three different levels and 19 different obstacles, from swinging timbers to cable bridges. Terrapin Adventures is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Terrapin Challenge, which includes the five major elements of the zip line, ropes course, climbing tower, terrapin flyer and giant swing costs $75 per person. Participants must be between 70 and 275 pounds, at least 48 inches tall and at least 8 years old.

For ages 5 and above, the Sandy Spring Adventure Park has 13 separate trails of varying difficulty levels that primarily consist of rope, cable and wood bridges connecting tree platforms. In addition, the park features different theme actiities like the Glow in the Park! evening ropes course sessions. The park is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from  8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Prices range from $47 to $56 for 3 hours of climbing.

The River Riders Family Adventure Resort at Harpers Ferry has a ropes course with 108 challenge elements and six trails. There is also a new course designed for ages 4 to 7. Be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 2 hours of climbing costs from $21 to $49.

Go Ape Zip Line is another fun adventure park in Maryland that consists of obstacles in the trees and Tarzan swings connected by bridges and zip-lines. Each activity is suspended over an incredible view and teaches visitors about overcoming their fears. Book your adventure online to find the best time to visit. Price: $49.
