Bowie family urges others to Race for Every Child

Consider signing the family up to Race for Every Child Oct. 1, 2016 at Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington, D.C. and help kids like Noah Brittain, 9, of Bowie.

Proceeds of the 5K walk/run and Kids' Dash go toward Children's National's efforts to help save lives and build strong, healthy futures for children by improving care, expanding access to care and finding cures for childhood diseases.

Race for every child Noah BrittainThe Brittain family has been the recipient of this care and is now giving back and participating in the run for the third year in a row. Noah was referred to Children's National Medical when he was 2 because of a heart murmur. It turned out Noah’s left pulmonary valve wasn’t connected to his heart. Noah’s doctors decided rather than risking an invasive surgery on a toddler to instead carefully monitor his progress on regular basis, all while letting Noah live with his “super lung.”

Every two to three years, Noah goes back to the hospital for a catheterization and, just last year, was one of the first patients to benefit from a new piece of equipment that simplified the surgical process. Noah's dad, Leon, says that taking part in the race is the perfect opportunity to give back.

“Noah has had a long journey, and we are so grateful for what Children’s National has done for him and our family,” Leon Brittain says. “The staff, the doctors, and the nurses have meant the world to our family. The Race for Every Child is one small way for us to show our support and help other children.”

The event draws serious runners, weekend joggers and families. The 100-yard Kids' Dash is open to ages 3 to 10. There will also be other family activities such as sports inflatables, face painting and obstacle courses.

Registration deadline is Sept. 27. Cost for the 5K is $50 and the Kids' Dash is $15. Visit raceforeverychild.org to register as an individual, start a team, become a sponsor or simply donate.
