Give back with service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a “Day On, Not a Day Off,” and serve with friends Jan. 16.

Volunteer groupFamilies and volunteers of all ages are invited to give back to the community by working on service projects provided by several local nonprofits. Children are welcome to join-in and see how fun and easy volunteering can be.

Opportunities will include designing valentines for troops overseas and their families at home, decorating and assembling toiletry bags for backpacks for children in foster care and making cards for seniors and those unable to leave their homes. Volunteers can also participate in activities that teach basic conflict resolution and communication skills as well as help with a project for people with development disabilities.

Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the Anne Arundel Food and Resource Bank. New or gently used coats for infants to high school students will also be collected. Be sure to leave a note of hope with every donated coat.

The Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center and Church on the Rock are partnering in the effort and are offer the volunteer opportunities in two shifts, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 2 p.m. Activities will be held at Church on the Rock in Millersville. All ages are welcome but participants 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. One adult is required for every group of six youth.
