Your family can step into an elephant-sized pantry, tour the Maryland Zoo's state-of-the-art food prep areas and learn about veterinarian-approved diet plans. To top it off, get in the mix and become an honorary zoo sous chef by helping to prepare meals and treats for the zoo residents. This 45-minute guided tour will take you through the behind the scenes areas where animal caretakers prepare the daily animal diets, order and store the items. Staff will also discuss the important role that diets play in animal welfare.

“Zoo Bites Tours are perfect for visitors who want to experience an important, yet often unseen part of our animal care,” said Andrew Young, commissary manager. “It’s a comprehensive tour that not only sheds light on complex animal diets, but also on veterinary care and animal enrichment. Plus, you get to roll up your sleeves and help us make some Zoo recipes.”

Are trivia and animal stories more your speed? Take a guided trek through The Maryland Zoo with an Insider’s Tour. This is your chance to test your knowledge and have all of your questions answered by a personal guide. Hands-on props add to the fun too. Feel how heavy sitatunga horns are, hold a bright pink flamingo feather and touch polar bear fur.

“Insider’s Tours offer unique looks at our animals and their adaptations,” said Hannah Rupert, education manager. “They’re perfect for those who want to know more about individual animals or their favorite species. In addition to viewing the animals and pointing out unique traits and stories, we share a lot of ‘wow’-worthy facts.”

Insider’s Tours are offered Friday-Monday, now through October, $10 per person. Commissary Tours are offered twice a month beginning in September, $29 for members and $39 for non-members. For details or to register, visit www.marylandzoo.org.
