Who doesn't love a bowl of hot soup on a cold winter day? This is an easy and thoughtful gift that the kids can help make for family friends or teachers for the holidays.

Ingredients for soup in a jar

soup4 quart-size Mason Jars
1 pound black beans
1 pound kidney beans
1 pound great northern beans
1 pound green split peas
1 pound pinto beans
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon dry mustard
2 tablespoon dehydrated onions
2 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoon garlic powder
2 tablespoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
8 bay leaves
4 bouillon cubes (chicken, beef, or vegetable)

To prepare the jar

Layer the beans evenly in the Mason jar as desired.

In a small bowl, combine the spices except for the bay leaf and bouillon cube. Using a small piece of parchment or wax paper, spoon 3 Tbsp of spice mixture in the middle of the paper, 2 bay leaves and 1 bouillon cube. Tape it closed around the edges and place it on top of the beans.

Decorate the jar with fabric or ribbon to make it festive and include a recipe tag.

Soup directions for recipe tag:

To make the soup, soak the beans overnight, add 6 cups of water, 1 can of diced tomatoes and the spice packet. Bring to a boil and then simmer until beans are tender.
