Buy local: Eat at restaurants that support Maryland farms

A simple way to support local farming is to patronize Maryland restaurants that feature local farm products.

Anne Arundel County

There are several farm-to-table restaurants in Annapolis. Here are just a few:

Factors Row, Annapolis - Sources produce and meat from local, independent farms.

Level, Annapolis - Small plates lounge committed to sourcing fresh ingredients from Maryland and nearby markets whenever pssible. Menu displays a list of the supported Maryland farms and products suppled, including dairy, produce, cheese, oysters and beef.

Level server RyanMetropolitan Kitchen & Lounge, Annapolis - Works with Maryland farms, including Coons Farm by the Bay on the Eastern Shore, to fulfill its farm-to-table philosophy and limit the impact on the enivronment.

Preserve, Annapolis - Newly opened in April 2015. The name partially reflects its mission to source foods locally. They also preserve at the restaurant.

Vida Taco Bar, Annapolis - Another relatively new restaurant (opened fall 2014) that sources locally.

Vin 909, Annapolis - Committed to serving farm fresh and organic ingredients on a seasonal menu.

Also, all restaurants listed as Annapolis Environmental Stewards have made a commitment to source locally and help reduce their carbon footprint.

Howard County restaurants

While many restaurants source locally all year, there is an extra emphasis during the summer Howard County Restaurant Week,  July 20-Aug. 3, 2015. New this year is a "Garden to Glass" promotion, where creative culinary artists or mixologists create drinks made with local ingredients. Tasters can vote on their favorites starting July 20.

Some farm-to-table restaurants in Howard County include:

AIDA Bistro and Wine Bar, Columbia - Uses fresh, local products and herbs grown in its own garden whenever possible. Farms it works with include Larriland Farm, Sharp's at Waterford Farm, Clark's Elioak Farm, Love Dove Farms and Zahradka Farm.

Iron Bridge Wine Company, Columbia - Stresses local ingredients and overlooks Clark's Elioak Farm.

King's Contrivance Restaurant, Columbia -  Works with Gorman Farm and others.

Victoria Gastro Pub,ictoria Gastro Pub, Columbia - Some herbs and produce in the restaurant is from the family-owned farm, Manor Lane. Also brews some of the beer at Manor HIll Farms in Ellicott City.

Elkridge Furnace Inn, Elkridge - works with several local area farms, primarily Myrtle Woods Farms for produce and copper Penny Farms for specialty meats. Both are near the restaurant. Also has its own organic garden that grows heirloom vegetables.

Tersiguel's, Ellicott City - Original owners operate a family farm.
