Get your Spook On

Explore the scarier side of Maryland’s history on a ghost walk or pub crawl.

It was a dark and steamy night, still nearly 90 degrees as the sun went down. Standing outside St. Anne’s Church in Annapolis with my friend and editor, Ann, the only chill we felt was the one going down our spines as we listened to our guide Shaun tell us tales of the graveyard and ghosts in the fountain on Church Circle.

We had booked ourselves on a Haunted Pub Crawl offered by Annapolis Tours & Crawls to kick off fall. We met at the Maryland Inn and spent the next two hours walking around Annapolis, stopping for pints along the way, and learning a whole new side of this city’s history. . . . Did you know that the Maryland Inn is the oldest working hotel in Maryland and that a widowed bride haunts the 4th floor? As we sat in the Drummers Lot, Maryland Inn's basement pub, with a cool pint in hand, we
were treated to the story of said bride and why (and how) she makes her presence known.

I am not usually a fan of scary movies or Stephen King novels but hearing tales about ghosts and seeing the places they haunt, was great fun and the perfect amount of spooky. On the tour, we were told that one of the bathrooms in the Maryland Inn had some paranormal activity and I will fully admit I kept my eyes wide open and my wits about me while I was in there. If there was a ghost in there, I was ready to meet it! And that feeling continued throughout the whole tour with each new site and every story told. Despite the still-summer heat the night sky was perfectly dark, the moon half covered by clouds, and the ghost stories were incredibly interesting, informative and exciting, all of which added up to a frighteningly great night out with a friend.

St annes BWFortunately for any of us who wants a dash of spookiness this fall, this area (Annapolis, Baltimore, Easton and Alexandria, Va., to name a few) is steeped in history. This means there’s not just textbook history to share, but also the history of the people who lived and died here and the many of them, even in death, who have never left. And the great storytellers of companies like Annapolis Tours & Crawls and Chesapeake Ghost Tours will share the best of these stories with you by bringing you to the graveyards and into the basement pubs, into the spookiest and most haunted places while spinning the tales and legends behind the ghosts haunting that very place. So if you are looking for a fun and scary night out this Halloween season, grab your friends, wear good walking shoes, and be prepared for a great night. You never know who (or what!) you might run into.
