Need a break from the summer heat? Grab the kids and catch a discount movie inside or out under the stars at one of several locations in central Maryland.

Theater chains like Cinemark and Regal offer $1 family shows throughout the summer, while sites like National Harbor and the Lakefront in Columbia offer free outdoor shows for a variety of ages. And don't forget about county libraries and community centers, which offer free screenings, too.

Lakefront Summer Festival - 2018 (Howard County) – Each year, the Columbia Association hosts free movies as part of its Lakefront Summer Festival at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. Bring a blanket to sit on.

Where: Wincopin Circle, Columbia. When: Mondays and Fridays at dusk, June 18-Sept. 30. Cost: Free. Information: www.ColumbiaAssociation.org/LakefrontFestival

Flicks From the Hill - 2018 (Baltimore City) – The American Visionary Arts Museum hosts these free films on Federal Hill in the Hughes Family Outdoor Theater. The museum is also open and free between 5 and 9 p.m. on movie nights. If it rains, movies are moved inside the museum's Jim Rouse Visionary Center.

Movies on the Potomac - 2018 (Prince George's County) – National Harbor, the waterfront development in Oxon Hill, offers free movies on the banks of the Potomac River. This year, guests will watch movies on National Harbor's new, "Jumbotron" LED screen. Bring a chair to sit on.

Where: 165 Waterfront Street, National Harbor. When: Sundays from 6 to 9 p.m. through September 30. Cost: Free. Information: www.nationalharbor.com.

The Wine Bin - 2018 (Howard County) – The Wine Bin in Ellicott City hosts free, outdoor movies on Saturdays throughout the summer. Movies are PG, PG-13 and R rated. They are projected onto the side of The Wine Bin's building. Popcorn and bottled water are available for a donation. In addition, the Wine Bin offers free wine tastings before all movies. Bring a chair and blanket to sit on. Movies include Grease, Pitch Perfect, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and many more.

The Capital Riverfront Movie Series - 2018 (Washington) - Canal Park in Washington D.C returns this year Thursdays from June through August. Each movie in this year’s lineup is selected and inspired by public demand and will begin at sundown. Arrive at Canal Park as early as 7:00 pm, bring a picnic, blanket and lawnchairs. Movies include Wonder Woman, CoCo and more.

Bow Tie Cinemas (Anne Arundel County) – Bow Tie Cinemas Harbour 9 in Annapolis offers a free kids summer film series on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. 

Where: Annapolis Harbour Center, 2474 Solomons Island Road, Annapolis. When: Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. from June 19 to Aug. 15. Cost: Free. Information: www.bowtiecinemas.com.

Cinemark Egyptian 24 at Arundel Mills (Anne Arundel County) – Cinemark's Summer Movie Clubhouse is a 10-week series of kids' films for just $1 per person, per show.

Regal Summer Movie Express (Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties) – Regal Entertainment Group offers $1 shows for 9 weeks in the summer.
