Ice skating is a great way to hide from the sun for a day, and walking into a chilly ice rink in the middle of summer offers instant relief.

“When it gets hot and sticky outside, it is very refreshing to go ice skating,” says Sigrid Berge, general manager and skating director for Capital Clubhouse Recreation Center in Waldorf.

The average temperature in an ice rink is 50 to 55 degrees, so most people like to wear long pants and gloves in case they fall. Ice skating can also be a good workout, requiring a little balance and perseverance, Berge says.

“It’s a great way to get in a little exercise on the side after all those summer ice creams and barbecues,” Berge says. “Ice skating utilizes your whole body and is fun for the whole family.”
