Dear Chesapeake Family,
Here is the story of how your publication affected so many people:
It started with two teachers Linda Geers and Jenifer Swanson Garcia from Germantown Elementary in Annapolis. They came up with the idea to have their students, who are in 2nd grade and in the program for children with english as their second language, for them to organize a buy-back program for all the Halloween candy collected by all the students in the school.
The students had to do all their requests in English and then all the candy collected would go to the troops. The students wrote posters, made announcements wrote flyers and informed all the students in the school of what they were trying to do, all in english as well.
Ms. Geers saw your article in the October issue of Chesapeake Family about buy-back programs and that dentists where offering to buy the candy. Dr. Collins and Associates was called about being the dentist they donated through because of the list that you had in the article. We were thrilled and of course accepted.
The kids collected 265lbs of candy! Dr. Collins personally went to the school to meet the students and to collect the candy for donation. What Ms. Geers did not tell her students was that Dr. Collins was going to give $1 per pound of candy, which would be donated to the Harvest for the Hungry food bank.
Dr. Collins wrote a check for $265 as well as a check for $235 to make it an even $500 for the Harvest for the Hungry food bank. The children were surprised and thrilled with what they accomplished. The 265lbs of candy was donated through the organization “Operation Welcome Home” and was picked up by volunteers from that organization from our offices a few days later. Dr. Collins also included with the Candy, new toothbrush kits for all the men and women who would receive the candy care package.
Pretty great story!
