Get the kids centered in nature
By Katie Riley
Ben Gardner, 16, of Millersville was always interested in nature but it was a visit to Jug Bay Wetlands Nature Center when he was in first grade that fed his lifelong passion for ecology.
“Going there and experiencing it firsthand, rather than reading about it in a book, was life-changing for me,” he says.
Now a volunteer with the internship program at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Gardner plans to study ecology in college. And he still enjoys visits to Jug Bay whenever he can get there.
“It’s just an all-around cool place to go,” he says. “The water, trails and wildlife are incredible.”
