Going out — Mommy Daze

GoingOutAnd so it begins.

The battle to get socks and shoes on the constantly moving 2-year old. The crying baby getting strapped into the car seat. The scramble to find “Blanky” and pack every feasible snack and beverage they may want. The grabbing of extra shirts for all three of us (the woes of reflux babies). The van stocked with diapers, wipes and burp cloths.

Then once at our destination — 45 minutes late at least — the concerned looks as I’m toting around a screaming baby, yelling after my toddler to come back. The whining and crying the whole car ride home while juice boxes and goldfish are being chucked at my head and Raffi blaring on the radio in hopes of drowning out, I mean, calming the screaming baby. The bedraggled, flustered, probably hungry and caffeine-deprived state in which I drag myself back into the house, dumping half-empty juice boxes and sticky coloring books onto the kitchen counter. The wide-eyed, slightly frightened look my husband gives me as I hand over his usually sleeping children.

It’s all worth it to hear my son ask me every morning in that sweet, innocent, inquisitive voice, “Where we going today, Mommy?”
