Benefits Anne Arundel County Special Olympics
While the state organization pays for the state Olympic games and supports the county programs through insurance coverage, proceeds from state fundraisings efforts, including the Polar Bear Plunge, do not directly fund the county program. The county raises its own funds to provide its services at no cost to the athletes.
One of the main ways the group raises money is through the annual golf tournament, which honors former Anne Arundel County athlete and coach Eddie Woods, who lost his battle with Cystic Fibrosis at age 25.
“The golf tournament in the past has been our biggest raiser,” says Gregg Meade, the program director. “It provides about 25 to 30 percent [of our funds].”
Meade says he has high hopes for the event this year after last year’s unfortunate cancellation due to fundraising problems and a change of date.
