Grab hands and head to the ice rink

Paige Alexander ice skatingBy Laura Barnhardt Cech

Paige Alexander should’ve been discouraged. During her first ice skating lesson at Piney Orchard Ice Arena, she fell and fractured her ankle.

But the then 9-year-old couldn’t wait to get back on the ice. She had so much fun learning to ice-skate that her mother was motivated to take a lesson. And today, both daughter (now 14) and mother are competitive ice-skaters.

“We joke in the adult group that there’s some chemical used to make the ice that makes you feel great,” says Miller Alexander, a Catonsville mother who serves on the board of Piney Orchard Ice Rink in Anne Arundel County and is a member of an adult skills team.

Although it can be intimidating, ice skating is rosie-cheeked, twirling, gliding, all-ages fun. It is a classic winter sport.

“It’s simple fun,” says Rachelle Weisberg, general manager of the Columbia Ice Rink. “And it’s great physical activity for the whole family.”

Kids as young as preschoolers and as old as grandparents can enjoy the rink.
