Marcus Penn, M.D.

  • While 20 weeks pregnant with twins in May 2012, I was admitted to the hospital after a routine sonogram due to an incompetent cervix. When this occurs in pregnancy, many times an emergency cerclage (stitch around the cervix) is performed to keep the cervix from dilating until the baby is closer to fill term. In my case, the amniotic sac of my baby boy was bulging through the cervix, so it was near impossible to get a stitch in my cervix without breaking the amniotic sac. After three days of all others telling me that nothing could be done to attempt to save my babies, and that I should induce labor, Dr. Penn volunteered to try an emergency vet late procedure by blowing up a sterile balloon to push the amniotic sac back into the uterus. That evening I was taken into surgery with Dr. Penn and a few other physicians that were assisting and wanted to observe. After the seemingly successful surgery, Dr. Penn even teared up when hugging my husband and giving him an update. Through fault of no one, two days later my water on Baby A had broken due to the amniocentesis needed to reduce the water volume during surgery. Heartbroken, to say the least, I was on strict hospital bed rest for the long haul and monitored closely for infection. Three weeks later I went into labor and delivered my twins due to a rapidly spreading infection, losing them both. Dr. Penn gave me his cell phone number so that I could contact him if I needed anything after the loss. I had heavy grief after losing my babies, as well as muscular atrophy and weakness due to the weeks of hospital bed rest, but he made sure that I had help if I needed it. Three months later I was pregnant again. Dr. Penn performed a preventative cerclage surgery at 11 weeks pregnant, and I was closely monitored through the duration by both Dr. Penn and The Center for Maternal and Fetal Medicine. During an ultrasound appointment with the CMFM, Dr. Sweeney remarked that he could guess who performed my cerclage without looking at the paperwork. He could see that the cerclage was very high and very tight and that only one doctor does cerclages that well! So thankfully that perfect cerclage held until I went into labor at 38 weeks with my daughter. Dr. Penn was on call the day my water broke and stayed at the hospital through the next day, long after his shift ended, to make sure he was the one to deliver my baby girl via C-section. He cried with us when she was delivered and there are no words to express how thankful I am for this amazing doctor. He is kind, compassionate and has a genuine care and concern for the well being of his patients. Not many doctors can connect with their patients the way that Dr. Penn does. As a new mom, I joined a local mom's group on Facebook. A post came up from one of the members about OB/GYN recommendations. Over a hundred comments were made, and they were overwhelmingly in favor of Dr. Penn. Each individual story carried the same tone: heartfelt gratitude for someone we trusted with the most precious little people coming into our lives.

Dr. Hundley is so loyal, I was in labor all day on her birthday, and even though Dr. Hundley could've left, she stayed until my son was delivered. Dr. Hundley also has the personality that is so reassuring. When the specialist told me something was wrong with my unborn child, even though she was not 100% sure, she reassured me that my pregnancy was progressing just fine and that day all of my anxiety and stress had seized.
