Holiday Family Fun, December 14–18

Hanukkah fun continues this week, as do holiday lights displays, train gardens, holiday performances and more! Enjoy the holidays from home or at outdoor activities all week long! Don’t miss the Ice Sculpting Masters drive-through in Ellicott City!

Monday, December 14

Hanukkah Stories Series
Dec. 10–17. Celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukah virtually and come together each night and listen to stories read by local families, enjoy interactive holiday crafts, and light the menorah candles. A special Hanukkah-related theme will inspire each night’s activities. Program is free and best suited for children age 10 and under. Dec. 10, 5 p.m.; Dec. 11, 4 p.m.; Dec. 12, 6 p.m.; Dec. 13-17, 5 p.m. Brought to you by the Jewish Museum of Maryland, the Center for Jewish Education, PJ Library, the JCC, and other community partners.

B&O’s Holiday Festival of Trains
Tour through each of Santa’s winter village shops during the entire Holiday Festival of Trains season. Santa’s winter shops are gingerbread-style storefronts with entrance for families to enjoy activities or treats. Admission: adults $20; children $12. Mon.–Sat. 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun. 11 a.m.–4 p.m. B&O Railroad Museum, Baltimore. 

The Nutcracker: Glen Echo Puppet Co.
Nov. 27–Jan. 1, Streaming. Marionettes tell the story of Clara-Marie’s favorite toy, and their adventures together in the Land of the Sugarplum Fairy. 

Tuesday, December 15

A Christmas Carol STREAMING
Dec. 15–Jan. 3. It wouldn’t be Christmas at Olney without Paul Morella’s solo performance of A Christmas Carol. We weren’t going to let COVID dampen the joy of the season, so we’ve created this new, filmed version of his one-man show of the Charles Dickens classic. Even better, you can watch as many times as you like between December 15, 2020 – January 3, 2021. That’s the Christmas Spirit! $20. Olney Theatre Center. 

Gallery 57 West Giveaway Countdown
The local artists of Gallery 57 West are creating a little holiday magic for you by giving away personally selected gifts, which can be won each day from the gallery in the month of December. When you visit share your experience on social media using the hashtag #57westgiveaway to be automatically entered.

Festival of Lights
Head to Watkins Park for the annual holiday drive-through that event features more than 2.5 million twinkling lights and a giant 54-ft LED Tree! $8–$20. 5–9:30 p.m. Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro. 

Wednesday, December 16

Hanukkah Celebration Paint & Sip
Dec. 16. Join via Zoom or in person at Chabad’s outdoor tent for Paint Night with step-by-step painting instruction and all supplies included. $28/person. 7 p.m. Chabad of Anne Arundel County, Annapolis.

Holiday Pops with Jack Everly (Virtual)
Dec. 16. Artistic Partner Wordsmith joins this special holiday episode with a new rendition of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” as a reflection on 2020. Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly presents a program of holiday cheer featuring familiar favorites including “Sleigh Ride”, “A Hanukkah Celebration,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. Spend part of your holidays virtually with the BSO! $10 Pay per view.

Virtual LEGO Build
Join the Discoveries library staff for an interactive challenge to test your building skills and creativity. Families are welcome and only need to register once. Free. Kids ages 6–10. 2–3 p.m.

Festive Nature Crafts and Ornaments
Using natural materials, create a fun and festive ornament or other seasonal creation! Hands-on activities will be provided in kit form, and must be picked up prior to the start of the first class. Must have a laptop or desktop with the capabilities to use Microsoft Teams with video camera and microphone to engage. All instructions will be emailed to participants after registration. You will receive a detailed email with all information you will need for this activity. 1–1:45 p.m.

Thursday, December 17

Tea with Mrs. Claus
Dec. 17, 12:30 p.m. Don your finest festive attire for a very special afternoon tea with Mrs. Claus! Guests will enjoy tea or hot cocoa, followed by traditional tea sandwiches and cakes. After lunch, take a train ride on the Reindeer Railway, then return to the B&O for craft and story time. Kids will take home their very own craft and leave their Christmas list with Mrs. Claus to make sure it goes directly to the big man in red! B&O Railroad Museum, Baltimore. Get your tickets here.

A Christmas Story

Christmas Movie Trivia
We’ve got another excuse for you to start watching Christmas movies now! We’re hosting Christmas Movie Trivia on December 17th at 7 p.m., covering “A Christmas Story,” “Elf,” “Home Alone” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Grab your team and get researching! The Tin Roof, Baltimore.

Little Minnows
For preschoolers ages 3–5, with an adult. This month’s theme is Lighthouse Discovery. Join us for story time and a carryout craft, available while supplies last. Sessions are 15–20 minutes. Offered at various times throughout the day.

Friday, December 18

Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Dec. 18. Trans-Siberian Orchestra will bring your favorite Rock Holiday tradition directly into your home with an up-close-and-personal livestream performance of “Christmas Eve and Other Stories!” Join us on Friday, December 18th at 8 p.m. EST for an intimate 90-minute performance of this beloved album. Tickets for this virtual event are on-sale now on tsolivestream.com. 

Virtual Winter Scavenger Hunt
Kids can register as a team and work together to find items around your house. You will be prompted to seek out items from around the house. Race against the clock to find the items in multiple rounds in order to earn the most points. Hosted by the Deale Library. 3:30–4:30 p.m. 

Ice Sculpting Masters Drive Through Holiday Display
December 18–19. Eight of the world’s best ice sculptors are coming to Maryland to compete for the 1st place medal. Almost 50,000 pounds of frozen water will be used to create 8 ice carving displays, each consisting of 20 crystal clear ice blocks. This is a U.S. National Championship event. Carvers will design and sculpt a sculpture based on our Theme: The Winter Season & The Holiday’s Around The World. The sculptures will be completed just before opening drive thru viewing to the public so everyone can see the finished work. A live ice-sculpting demonstration will be happening at our lot entrance each night. 4–10 p.m. $40 per car. Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City.
