How to Take Great Family Photos

Follow the Light

One hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset are the best time for pictures. Stay out of direct sunlight, which can be harsh and cause everyone to squint. Look for what photographers call “open shade” which can be found in front of large buildings, under a favorite old tree, or even out in the open on an overcast day. Don’t confuse “open shade” with shadows. You don’t want dappled sunlight, which can cast shadows on your subjects.

If you’re taking pictures in your home, keep your flash off and choose the room that gets the most light at the optimal time of day for your family. If morning is best, choose the room or space with the best morning light. Position yourself in front of the windows so that the light is at your back and you’ll be amazed at how much brighter your pictures turn out.
