July is National Parks and Recreation Month

SpaCreekBoatLaunchIn conjunction with other recreation and parks agencies across the country, Annapolis Recreation and Parks is celebrating National Park and Recreation Month during July.

Parks and recreation are integral cornerstones of a community’s social connections, as well as physical, mental and environmental health. Parks and recreation build communities through fostering social groups, connectivity, activities and common interest.

Parks are a vital component to the recreational habits of Americans, which, in turn, are key elements to health and wellness. This year’s national theme is “Rock Your Park” — a campaign focused on raising awareness of this issue and getting people engaged in visiting, supporting and preserving this critical resource.

On a national and local level, park and recreation facilities and services are at risk due to budget cuts. Who could imagine life without hiking trails, sports complexes, recreation programs, youth activities and picnic areas? Park and recreation areas economically benefit their local communities by raising property values, creating jobs, and increasing commerce and retail. These agencies encourage fitness and active lifestyles, as well as a healthier environment through green spaces that create clean air and reduced greenhouse gases. Safeguarding these resources is each individual person’s responsibility.

Now is the time to get involved and make a difference. We encourage you to get out to the City’s park, trails and open spaces during the month of July!
