Juneteenth Celebrations Happening in Maryland

Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States in 1865, specifically when the news that the Civil War ended and that the enslaved were now free. Today, the day is celebrated with music, food and festivities that focus on self-improvement, education and honoring the history of ancestors. Celebrations are taking place across Maryland this year. Annapolis Juneteenth Celebration

June 17-18 | The second annual event commemorating the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States kicks off with a ticketed VIP gala on Friday evening, followed by a parade and festival on Saturday. The parade begins at City Dock at 12 noon, and wraps up at the Bates Athletic Complex where the celebration continues with live music and entertainment, food, and vendors. This year, there will be TWO main stages, featuring headliners Avery*Sunshine, Koryn Hawthorne, Pastor Mike Jr., Beverly Crawford, the Chuck Brown Band, and a host of local talent! Juneteenth in Chestertown

June 17-18 | The Frederick Douglass Juneteenth Celebration “Day of Acknowledgment” will celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of African American life on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. This year, on June 18th, 2022, the Fredrick Douglass Juneteenth “Day of Acknowledgment” Celebration will serve as a collective act of service and celebration of Black history. This will be a day of education about the African American experience that will have meaningful impact on the Eastern Shore community. This event will connect the Eastern Shore’s Black history with the Eastern Shore’s role in the founding and ongoing development of our nation. Juneteenth Family Day

June 18 | Celebrate Juneteenth—the annual holiday commemorating the end of legal slavery in the United States—with family-friendly art-making and activities at the National Archives Museum. 1pm, Boeing Learning Center, National Archives Museum. museum.archives.gov

Juneteenth Celebration at the Columbia Lakefront

June 19 | Join us for a Juneteenth Celebration at the Columbia Lakefront. Bring your family and friends, blankets and lawn chairs to the Columbia Lakefront for fun, music, food and kids activities as we join in community to celebrate Juneteenth and commemorate the end to slavery in the United States. NAACP Calvert Juneteenth Community Day Celebration Talent Show

June 19 | Enjoy a free, high energy talent contest, classic car show, mobile health unit as well as local African American Heritage activities, including dance, music, games, bike giveaway, story-telling, food and crafts. 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, St. Leonard.

Juneteenth Freedom Celebration

June 19 | National Harbor will hold a Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. on the Plaza stage with performances from the Prince George’s County Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate, local dancers, live music, artists and more. The property is partnering with the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council for a day of education, reflection and celebration. Food truck Mardi Gras Tyme will add to the festivities and offer a variety of southern cuisine samples. Post-Juneteenth Celebration

June 25 | Join us for this FREE Post-Juneteenth Celebration, featuring our very special guest, Janice Curtis Greene (“Janice the Griot”), who will share moving and inspiring freedom stories. Other special guests include Sharoll Williams-Love, Hosanna School Museum; Nia Webb, First Place Winner, 2022 Langston Hughes Youth Oratorical Contest; Natasha Jackson, sharing her musical gifts; and Felicia Grant-Hopkins, Harford County Health Department.
