Want to paint a fire hydrant in the Solomons-Dowell community in Solomons Island? Now’s your chance if you act fast.
A new public art project called Solomons Splash is looking for designs inspired by life in and around the Chesapeake Bay to spruce up their fire hydrants. Anyone can submit a design – families, individual, groups — and the winners will get the chance to paint their design on a fire hydrant. The contest is sponsored by the Annamarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center and applications and hydrant design templates can be downloaded by visiting www.annmariegarden.org . The application deadline is this weekend, March 31.
All designs will be posted on Facebook and the public will be invited to vote for their favorite designs. A panel of judges will choose the winning designs and winners will be announced April 20. Winning designs must paint their hydrant between June 1-17. All the hydrants will be part of the Solomons Splash Scavenger Hunt and each hydrant will be included in a special Solomons Splash Scavenger Hunt brochure that will be available in the Solomons Visitors Center and other locations in the area. The scavenger hunt will run June 17 to Oct. 8.
