Learn about oysters and life on the water in Solomons

Be an oyster shucker for a day Aug. 20 at the Lore Oyster House Day in Solomons.

Travel back in time in this oyster packing house. Meet the skimmer, tie on an apron and become a shucker, and try your hand at oyster tonging. Kids can also try tying a tow line and coiling a rope. Follow the path an oyster takes through the packing house from unloading at the dock to the shipping room.

Oyster DaysThe event is free and runs 1-4 p.m. at Lore & Sons Oyster House.

While there be sure to head to the nearby Calvert Marine Museum and check out the Discovery Room, where kids can search for real 8-20 million years old fossils. They can also climb into a model of the Cove Point Lighthouse and turn on the light, then put on a costume to play in the keeper’s house. In a skiff built in the museum’s boat shop, they can raise and lower the sail, steer with the rutter and lower the anchor. A touch tank is filled with curious creatures from the Chesaepake Bay and Atlantic Ocean including horseshoe crabs, diamondback terrapins, sea stars and more.

A Marsh Walk wanders over a scenic natural salt marsh. See evidence of raccoon, opossum and muskrats as well as great blue herons and other birds. Learn how marshes work as nature’s filter by cleansing the water with each tidal change.
