Let’s Start Running

By Dylan Roche

Starting a running routine can be a great challenge to undertake. Whether you’re a parent, kid, teen, or even a grandparent, you can start a running routine in a way that’s right for your age or fitness level. It all starts the same way—with putting one foot in front of the other.

Adapt the Basics

First, find a great running route. Whether you’re going out as a group or individually, decide on a place that’s safe and convenient. Younger kids might want to stick with doing laps around the neighborhood, while teens are probably responsible enough to go the local park or bike trail.

Then, start with walking. Running apps like Couch to 5K can help each member of your family create a plan where you alternate walking and running for several weeks until you’re able to run a full 3.1 miles. As a family, you’ll hold one another accountable and tell yourselves not to give up—sometimes the most rewarding challenge is to keep running and not stop to walk even if you have to go slowly.

Finally, register for a virtual race. Encourage yourself to stick with it by registering for a virtual race as a family. You’ll be able to track your distance, time yourselves, and see how you did compared with other participants. You’ll also get to connect with other runners to swap tips and encouragement. Charm City Run is a great local resource for virtual races, and Gone for a Run has some cool challenges you won’t want to miss.
