Family-friendly workplace policies are more important than ever to parents who are trying to juggle raising their kids and successfully pursuing a career. At the same time, Maryland employers are looking at the benefits and policies they can implement to attract the best applicants in a market with low unemployment.

Are you an employer who has family-friendly policies and offers benefits that make life better for working parents? Or, are you an employee of a company that fits that description? If so, be recognized as a Family-Friendly Business!

Family-Friendly Workplace Awards

The Family-Friendly Workplace Awards recognizes businesses that help parents combine careers with family. Employers increasingly realize that offering flexibility and benefits is the quickest way to attract and keep the best employees. With unemployment at the lowest point in years, it’s more important than ever to offer benefits that parents want and need.

All-size businesses and non-profits are encouraged to apply. The requirements are adjusted for the number of employers in recognition that can be tougher for small businesses to offer the same number of benefits as our larger employers.

1-4 employees (must have at least 5 features and benefits checked to receive designation)

5-9 employees (must have at least 6 features and benefits checked to receive designation)

10-19 employees (must have at least 7 features and benefits checked to receive designation)

20-49 employees (must have at least 8 features and benefits checked to receive designation)

50+ employees (must have at least 9 features and benefits checked to receive designation)

To apply for your business or organization, simply fill in the form here.

We will verify the contact information and inform you if the qualifications have been met.

All employers who have met the requirements will be included in a directory in the November issue of Chesapeake Family Life and an online directory on our website at no charge. The November issue will focus on work/life balance with a series of articles about working families.

Important Benefits According to Moms

Moms are chiming in. They listed the following as important factors when they consider taking a job.

  • “Work-from-home options. Sick days. Positive reinforcement.”
  • “Pro-family first, flexibility, open communication.”
  • “Part-time options.”
  • “As a single mom, it’s a flexible schedule and the ability to work from home if needed.”
  • “Part-time options, flexible work times, remote or hybrid options, generous PTO, and sick time.”
  • “The most important things for me since becoming a parent have been flexibility with my schedule. I currently work a hybrid schedule and love spending 2 days a week with my son and can work an extra remote day if he has a doctor’s appointment or something. PTO. Benefits!”
  • “Negotiable start or end time so one parent can do drop off and the other pick up. It’s so much better when it’s not on one parent.”
