Maryland Out of School Time Network Releases SAIL Toolkit

Many people are unaware they qualify for benefits such as food stamps (SNAP), childcare subsidies, and Medicaid or feel uncomfortable applying for support. Out of School Time programs are uniquely positioned to help connect families to benefits.

The Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network has collaborated with the Department of Human Resources to develop a toolkit to increase the use of the Service Access and Information Link (SAIL), https://www.marylandsail.org, by community based youth providers.

Community organizations that serve youth have direct access to at-risk children and their families. By partnering these organizations with the Department of Human Resources to use the SAIL application, the state can began to address issues surrounding hunger.

The toolkit is designed to:
o    Help reduce the stigma of applying for government assistance
o   Help  organizations address the needs of their communities
o   Build greater understanding of benefit options and eligibility
o   Allow residents to apply for benefits electronically with support from trusted organizations
o   Build awareness of  additional resources including WIC info, food pantry and shelter information

Community organizations will learn how to register as Community Partners and act as liaisons to the Department of Human Resources. The toolkit will provide these partners with the information they need to help community members gain access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other benefits.

The Maryland Out of School Time Network is an active member of Governor’s Partnership to End Childhood Hunger. For more information visit: www.nokidhungrymd.org <http://www.nokidhungrymd.org>
