The Baltimore Sun reports that Maryland school districts are transitioning to drastic new standards and teacher evaluation systems. Anne Arundel Superintendent Kevin Maxwell told the Sun, “It is a time of really significant change.” Changes are being implemented out of a desire to obtain federal funding, and will rely on student testing to evaluate teacher performance.
According to the Sun,
“Many of the new reforms are promoted by the U.S. Department of Education program called Race to the Top, which promised federal stimulus dollars in exchange for a promise of reforms. Maryland won $250 million in the competition.”
