Programs from the Department of Parks and Recreation channel the kids’ energy with very age-specific programs. They all combine floor exercise, tumbling, and balance beam games from age 24 months to 4 years. There are also programs that are more creative or introduce music and sports geared to tots and toddlers. Most of them run for several weeks, and there is a fee. Kinder Farm Park in Millersville is home to the local 4-H Club and has lots of farm animals in the barn for the kids to see and pet. The visitor center recreates a farm from the 1930s, and there are a few interactive exhibits. Equally important, there is a rest room! The playground outside is divided into age-appropriate areas, and the hill by the lot is popular for sledding. (1001 Kinder Farm Park Rd., Millersville. Open daylight hours. 410-222-6115)
“Boundless” playgrounds are designed to be fun for all children, with design features that make them accessible for kids with disabilities. The larger ramps and easier-to-maneuver play areas make them ideal for little ones, too. Lake Waterford Park in Pasadena and Fairland Regional Park in Laurel (Prince George’s County) have them.
