Maryland Zoo accepting applications for new Teen Leaders Program

Maryland-Zoo-in-BaltimoreThe Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has announced a new program for high school juniors and seniors who want to learn about careers in the non-profit field.

The Teen Leaders Program is a unique service-learning experience combining group discussion, hands-on learning activities, and group service projects for nine Saturdays throughout the school year. The program will introduce teens to how the zoo functions as a model of non-profit management. Through this program, teens will be better educated on the careers in the non-profit sector and options for post-secondary education. They will learn how to write resumes and prepare for job interviews.

Participants will also be able to compete for a paid summer work experience at the zoo.

The Zoo will accept up to 20 students for the program. Prospective candidates are required to complete an online application and participate in an interview with zoo staff.

Applications are due Jan. 10, 2013. Please note that this is not a program solely about animal care, zoo keeping, or veterinary science.

Teen Leaders will come to the Zoo for nine 4-hour sessions (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) on Saturdays from Feb. 2, 2013 and through April 6, 2013.

The program will include a general understanding of the non-profit world (mission, governance, funding, types of non-profits, etc.). During the sessions, teens will meet with employees at the Zoo, including several senior staff and executives, from a wide-range of departments, including marketing, fundraising, finance, volunteer management, event planning, hospitality, education, animal collections management, security, and more. Each speaker will talk about the type of work that he or she does, how one would train for a career in his or her field, and why the job is important. Hands-on activities and service projects will allow the students to experience the work of the speakers. Participants will volunteer at the Bunny BonanZOO event in March 2013.

For information about the program and the application process please contact the Volunteer Office at volunteers@marylandzoo.org or 443-552-5266.
