Benefits of Homeschooling

Roe’s children have been able to take advantage of some very unique opportunities because of homeschooling. Her oldest daughter, Kaely, 25, finished her freshman year of college and senior year of high school simultaneously and then was able to take out a loan and open a coffee shop at the ripe old age of 19. Her son, Lucas, a graphic design major at Towson University, is a pianist, and she says homeschooling allowed him to fit his academics around his musical pursuits.

“They have been able to fit their academics around their lives as opposed to the other way around,” she says.

Julie Capp, Baltimore, says her eight-year-old daughter, Lydia, was diagnosed with a learning disability last year, which would probably not have been caught until this year if Lydia had been in public school, because the schools do not test students for learning disabilities until third grade. “Thankfully, because we did homeschooling, we were able to get intervention much earlier,” Capp says.
