Homeschooling Tweens

The tween years are a critical time for students’ emotional, intellectual, and physical development. Some families choose to homeschool their children through the middle-school years, allowing them to experience this personal development, and come into their own, without the additional stress of trying to “fit in” in a traditional school setting. The HSLDA recommends the following books for parents interested in homeschooling, or simply learning more about, their middle school-aged children.

• Homeschooling the Middle Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 8-to-12-Year-Old Child, by Shari Henry

Offers resources and advice for guiding children through the late elementary years. Also includes many interdisciplinary study techniques.

• The Five Love Languages of Teenagers, by Gary D. Chapman, Ph.D.

The primary love language of teens is quality time, and in this book, Dr. Gary Coleman teaches parents how to express love in a way your teenager will understand and receive.

• Parenting Teens with Love and Logic, by Foster Cline and Jim Fay

• Preparing for Adolescence: How to Survive the Coming Years of Change, by James Dobson, Ph.D.
