March 14 is Pi Day, a common date for events that celebrate math and learning. The first three digits of pi, a mathematical constant that goes on indefinitely, are 3.14.
This year, the math tutoring center Mathnasium of Gambrills is commemorating the annual holiday with a free, family-friendly festival full of fun math activities meant to foster children’s appreciation for mathematics.
The event will include interactive learning stations with hands-on, math-themed activities, brainteasers and the Pi Day Champion contest, where kids can compete against each other to test their math skills. Mathnasium of Gambrills has also partnered with Papa John’s to supply pizza for the party—because “pi” and “pie” are homonyms, discounts and deals on pizza from chain restaurants are common during the holiday.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate Pi Day with our community and show families how fun math can be,” says Alex Dunham, center director of Mathnasium of Gambrills, in a news release. “Pi Day is a great opportunity for kids to explore math in a playful, hands-on way. Our event is all about making math fun and engaging for everyone, whether they’re playing games, squishing slime or enjoying a slice of pizza. It’s a chance to enjoy the day and discover how math can be exciting for kids of all ages.”
This is one of the Gambrills’ location’s first public events since its opening in early 2024, and everyone in the community is invited to join in on the educational fun, whether they are currently being tutored in math at Mathnasium or are just stopping by.
Mathnasium is also holding a Pi Day sweepstakes for all of its national locations in collaboration with Camp Stores, where three winners will receive a $3,140 Mathnasium scholarship and a $314 Camp Stores gift card.
