MD students can create BGE safety comic book cover

BGECaptainYour class can earn up to $10,000 in prizes by creating a Captain Mercaptan comic book cover in a contest sponsored by Baltimore Gas and Electric.

The 2015 BGE Gas Safety Contest “The Adventures of Captain Mercaptan” is open to Maryland students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Students are challenged to develop a hand-drawn comic book cover and adventure story for Captain Mercaptan and his two sidekicks, Sunny and Piper. BGE launched the Captain Mercaptan Challenge last year to help create awareness of natural gas safety. The hero derives his name from mercaptan, the odorant added by utilities to normally odorless natural gas to make it safer and detectable by scent.

Eligible public and private elementary schools across BGE’s serice area can submit entries through March 15. The downloadable entry kit is available online at BGEGasHero.com. Each class will work through a natural gas safety lesson provided in the entry kit and then complete a fill-in-the-blank adventure story as a class. Each student will have the opportunity to hand illustrate their own “Adventures of Captain Mercaptan” comic book cover and the class will then vote on one cover to accompany the class’ written adventure story. Before winners are chosen there will be a period of online voting from March 23 to April 5.

Eligible schools will have an opportunity to win the following awards:

  • BGE Captain’s Award – $10,000
  • BGE Hero Award – $5,000 for winners in Kindergarten – Fifth Grade (one winner, per grade)
  • BGE Spotlight Award (for the drawing with the most online votes) – BGE backpacks full of school supplies and safety gear

Winners will be announced when the judging period ends sometime after April 20.
