Take the kids to the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. to see one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of its kind.
Kids can weave a giant basket, explore different modes of transportation like snowshoes and skateboards, sit inside a tipi and stamp their imagiNATIONS passport with a real tribal seal as they explore the imagiNATIONS Activity Center.
The activity center also has a craft room which gives visitors the opportunity to create art projects and take them home. The newest activities include a kayak balancing game and Native Beats Music Room, where kids can explore music through Native percussion instruments. You can even test your knowledge of Native history, culture and customs by participating in a competitive quiz show.
Be sure to stop by the Welcome Desk as you enter the museum. Ask for a schedule for activities and programs, and pick up the Family Guide to the museum’s exhibits or download a copy in advance.
Admission is free. Located on the National Mall between the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum and the U.S. Capitol Building. The museum is open 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily. For details viit the National Museum of the American Indian website.
