MD Summer Fun Day #75: Explore medicine, health and history at National Museum of Health and Medicine

NMHM-Civil-War-Exhibit-webHave a budding doctor in your family? How about a sports enthusiast or history lover? The National Museum of Health and Science in Silver Spring, Md., combines health and history in many of its exhibits and plans special programs about health just for kids.

Find out how the surgeon missed locating the bullet that killed President Abraham Lincoln — and see the bullet — while learning more about Lincoln’s injury, autopsy and final hours. With a special emphasis on military medicine, the museum has a section devoted to the Civil War. Some of the more unusual exhibits in the museum include the myths and realities behind hairballs.

A special program Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, 10:30 a.m.-noon, will appeal to avid sports-players and athletes of all levels and ages. Learn how your body works and get tips to stay off the sidelines in “Anatomy of Sports,” 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Athletes will demonstrate their sport while medical illustrators and physical therapists show how muscles and bones work together.

Also mark your calendar for another free special program after summer’s over. Younger kids can take a stuffed friend to the Teddy Bear Clinic at the National Museum of Health and Medicine Sept. 13, 2014, to learn about the body, physical fitness and healthy habits. This hands-on program from 10 a.m.-noon is recommended for preschoolers through grade 2.

General exhibits may be best for families with kids in the upper elementary grades and older.

Museum hours: Open 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

The museum is located near the Silver Springs and Forest Glen stations on the Metro Red Line. Click here for visitor information and directions.
