MD Summer Fun Day #94: Explore Theodore Roosevelt Island

RooseveltIslandTake the family to Theodore Roosevelt Island, a little piece of wilderness in the middle of the Potomac.

Mason Island was transformed in the 1930’s from overgrown farmland to restored native forest in honor of Teddy Roosevelt and was renamed for him.

Now three trails wander through the diverse terrain of the island. From the trails you can abandon the cement and see abundant wildlife. There is no visitor center but there is a formal memorial to Roosevelt that includes a plaza with quotes. This unique island is magical in its austerity and serenity. It is a great place to go and escape the city.

For continued adventures follow the Mount Vernon Trail or the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail by bike or foot, both long distance trails pass by the island.

Check out the Theodore Roosevelt Island website for directions, a trail map and more information about upcoming events and programs.
