MD Summer Fun: Visit Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

backyard science1fSituated on the eastern side of the Patuxent River in Lothain, Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is made up of over 20,000 acres of tidal freshwater wetlands. The sanctuary works to protect vital wildlife habitat, promote research and educate the public about the natural environment.

Visitors can hike the over 15 miles of hiking trails and boardwalks, go fishing, take part in programs or visit the brand-new Nature Play Space outside of the Visitor’s Center, where kids can delight in the sunken canoe, musical instruments made from natural materials and a cave made entirely from sticks.

The miles of trails and boardwalks at Jug Bay are home to inhabitants of many species, and families can learn about them inside the Visitor’s Center through hands-on games and activities. There are also three box turtles and stream fish that live in the center. Jug Bay’s Children’s Discovery Series offers regularly scheduled educational activities focusing on amphibians, insects, birds and marine life.

Jug Bay has also been designated an “Important Place for Birds” by the National Audubon Society, and the Saturday morning bird walk is a popular attraction for families who want to see feathered friends up close.
