Kernel Rating (out of 5):
MPAA Rating: PG Length: 127 minutes
Age Appropriate for: 8+. Some jokes (like one about the paternity of an unborn baby) are pointed directly at parents, but otherwise the film may be too scary for younger kids; images of a train crash and a main character turning into a robot could be fairly frightening.
Martin Scorsese doesn’t usually make films for children, and ‘Hugo’ doesn’t pander to youth. But the film is a compelling, beautiful, achingly nostalgic fantasy, an exercise in how gorgeous sentimentality can be.
