The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD is sponsoring “Navy Way” Boot Camps on Saturday, July 16. Basic Boot Camp will be held in the morning and Advanced Boot Camp in the afternoon. Registration deadline is July 6.
Basic Boot Camp runs from 10 a.m. to noon for recruits six through 12. Recruits are issued a sailor’s cap, learn Navy terms, march, chant, follow orders and eat in a simulated mess. Cost is $36.00 and includes “Dixie cup” cap, boot camp, lunch (two slices of pizza and soda) and a certificate of participation, which each Swabbie receives at graduation.
Groups of 10 or more will be assigned a personal Boot Camp Commander, but a group reservation must be made three weeks in advance. Scouts who declare their pack number on the reservation form, whether signing up as an individual or as part of a group, will receive a patch.
Advanced Boot Camp runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and is for graduates of Basic Boot Camp who are between the ages of nine and 12. Swabbies take seamanship training (tying knots), learn how to use semaphore flag and march in precision drill. Cost is $36.00 (with cap) or $41.00 (if purchasing new cap) and includes all training materials. Graduates attain the rank of Swabbie 1st Class and receive a certificate of participation and a button for their “Dixie cup” cap at graduation.
