New Calvert County superintendent starts blog

CurryThe new superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools has started a blog called “School Talk” where he will be sharing his thoughts on education.

Dr. Daniel Curry took over the position of superintendent July 1, replacing interim superintendant Nancy Highsmith who served after former superintendent Jack Smith left in July 2013 to take the position of Chief Academic Officer for the Maryland State Department of Education.

Curry, who was most recently the superintendent of Lake Forest School District in Felton, DE., started his blog earlier this month.

“What you’ll find here are occasional musings on educational issues,” he said in his first School Talk blog. “I may respond to a question from staff, students or community members. I may respond to comments left on the blog by a reader. I may write about a hot button issue in the community. Or, I may simply tell a story from my experiences.”

In his blog this past week, he shared his first impressions of Calvert County — including feedback from residents such as the deputy sheriff who stopped him for speeding on Rt. 260.

Curry, who was named Delaware’s Superintendent of the Year in 2011, is hoping for reader feedback on his blog.

“On a blog, people can read what’s been posted any hour of the day or night. On a blog, they can comment at any time as well. On a blog, they can say what they want and remain anonymous,” he wrote.

He will, however, be reviewing comments before they are posted, not to edit criticism, just to make sure there is no inappropriate language and personal attacks on employees, he said.
