New Presidential Youth Fitness Program unveiled

The President's Council's on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition has released a new Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which emphasizes health and goal setting over athletic performance. Do you remember the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test from when you were a kid? For 50 years, the President’s Challenge has provided a standardized test to help schools across the country measure the physical fitness of students, and for the first time in 50 years, the program is changing.

This school year is officially the last year of the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test. The President’s Council’s on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition has released a new Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which emphasizes health and goal setting over athletic performance. Where the Fitness Test evaluated students using a list of standard norms, the new program evaluates students on an individual basis and compares students to their own personal records to see how their health is improving.

First Lady Michelle Obama unveiled the new program last month on the Dr. Oz and Rachel Ray Shows. The goal is no longer to identify who in the class is the fastest or the strongest. Rather it is to identify for students, their parents and physical education teachers ways in which each child is healthy and areas that they may need improvement.

There are also components of the program designed especially for parents, such as the Parent Resource Guide, which includes information about the Presidential Youth Fitness Program and has tips for helping your family stay active.
