The Grinch's Gift Exchange

Santa’s arrival is just a few weeks away. Many people are hoping their tree ends up surrounded by gifts from what seems a harmless gift exchange, but be cautious. This gift exchange may do nothing more than empty your wallet and fill up your inbox with spam.

Pajama Drive during Olney Theatre's "Annie"

comfort cases

The Olney Theatre Center is sponsoring a pajama drive during its run of the beloved musical “Annie” (running November 10 through December 31; for tickets). Pajamas collected will go to Comfort Cases, a local organization that provides backpacks and duffel bags filled with essentials and a few comforts to kids in the foster care system.

High School Mountain Biking Program Rides into Maryland

Student mountain bikers from Maryland will soon have the opportunity to compete in the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League. Organized in 2017, the league will provide a fun, safe and high-quality mountain biking program for students in grades 6 to 12. Maryland joins the growing National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), a youth development organization governing interscholastic mountain biking in the United States, as a member of the 2018-2019 class of new leagues.

Extreme weather and natural disasters - does your family have a plan?

ThinkstockPhotos 695652742Watching the devastation in Texas from Hurrican Harvey last week is heartbreaking. Now Irma has Florida in her path. The phrase, “There but for the grace of God go I,” hits close when you realize that Maryland too is vulnerable to all types of extreme weather, which can quickly leave your family in an emergency situation.

Yumi Hogan hones the art of being Maryland's First Lady

It would be easy to paint Yumi Hogan as the perfect first lady. Engaging, demure and graceful, she is the consummate hostess. She greets staff members by name, receives guests warmly with both hands, and seems more worried about everyone else’s comfort than her own.

But the strengths of Maryland’s first lady extend far beyond her expert hostess skills. As a working artist and teacher, and the nation’s first Korean-American first lady, Yumi Hogan is redefining her role as the stereotypical politician’s wife.
