Chesapeake Family Life Best of 2017

As the year 2017 winds down, we took a look at our most well received articles of the year. If you don't count our directories (Preschool, Private School, Day Camps and others), and seasonal events, here are our top five from the year. As always, we think you'll find them useful, even if you missed them the first time around!

1. Questions Preschool Directors Wish Parents Would Ask

Wondering what questions to ask a preschool director when looking for a preschool in Maryland for your child?

When parents get beyond, "is there an opening," they often have no idea what question to ask the preschool director next. As a child reaches preschool age, parents face endless options about where to enroll their son or daughter. Will it be near home or work? What is the school’s educational philosophy? What type of preschool curriculum is used? What is the experience of the teachers?

Preschool directors say that all of these factors are important—along with many more. The most surprising thing, says preschool director Vicki De Hamer is when parents don’t have any questions at all.

Here is some advice from preschool directors themselves on just what types of questions are best to ask when searching for a preschool in Maryland.

WaterFalls KilgoreW2. Five Cool Hikes to Maryland Waterfalls

There's no better way to entice your kids on hike than picking a route that leads to a waterfall.

On a Sunday morning at Cascade Falls in Patapsco State Park, the shrieks of delighted children were the only sounds to disturb the surrounding woodlands.

"Awesome!" shouted my daughter as we spotted our first glimpse of the falls from the Cascades Hiking Trail. "Cool!" echoed my 7-year-old, as he flung his shoes and jumped off a craggy rock into the pool of water at the base of the falls.

The allure of waterfalls has been documented for centuries, but they are never more enticing than on a hot summer's day. Here are five hikes in Maryland where your family can experience the magic of a waterfall.

3. 12 Exciting Date Adventures for you and your Spouse in the Annapolis Area

Date adventures don't have to be a thing of the past for Baltimore/Annapolis area parents. There are plenty of ways for Mommy and Daddy to get their groove back.

Liz and Kevin Parker of Owings have a nearly fail-safe system for making and keeping their date nights. For the last 10 years they have combined forces with three other families to make sure a monthly date night happens.

On a mutually agreed upon Saturday night, three couples drop their kids off at the fourth couple's house. They all have appetizers, chat and then the three couples go their separate ways for their dates while the kids stay at the hosting family's house, eat dinner and play. The couples are expected back no later than 11 p.m., Parker explains.

The opportunity for kids to exercise and energize can be hard to come by when it's too cold or hot outside to play. Fortunately, the Baltimore/Annapolis area has numerous community centers, mall playgrounds, gyms and museums that offer indoor play for free, or at least a low cost.

At Annapolis Mall, a dozen toddlers climbed and crawled around an aquatic themed "playground" with a whale tail slide, a mini submarine and plenty of interactive toys.

Parents and caregivers sat back and watched as their little ones ran and played within the warmth of the indoors....

Annapolis, Maryland is a great place to visit with kids. Established in 1649, the historic colonial section of Annapolis is relatively small and easy to explore on foot and is bordered by a busy waterfront that is usually full of boats.

For families with children, historic Annapolis boasts the U.S. Naval Academy, the oldest state house still in use, a maritime museum, several historic homes, waterfront activities, a happening playground and plenty of unique places to eat and shop.
